2016 SWA Nomination Submitted by Stephanie Frankline of Fort Washington, Md, Alexandra Steinheimer of Silver Spring, Md, and Michelle Lara of Falls Church, Va
Please tell us about your nominee and what makes her a Supreme Woman
How do we begin to describe a woman as supreme as Karina? Is it her bubbly personality, or the care she gives to everyone around her? Whether as a senior manager or as a mom to her only son, she strives for nothing but the best and inspires greatness in the people around her. Whether it’s friends or family or colleagues, she encourages people to achieve their greatest as she has done and continues to do.
Accomplishments and Impact:
How is her work or contribution to society making a difference?
As an immigrant and a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, Information Technology, Karina has worked her way up the ladder to senior management with integrity and perseverance. She willingly shares her experience to mentor those around her. Even as a member of senior management, she takes the time to mentor several women in the office and guide them on their career path and personal endeavors. One of her guiding principles is that she was mentored as she was beginning her career; it is important to give the care that she was given back to others. One example would be when Karina unselfishly gave her time to help a colleague study and pass her CPA exam. She has invested her time in building our strengths and has guided us on our respective career paths. She has provided us with every opportunity to succeed and shine. We both started at entry-level positions at our company, and Karina quickly recognized that our skills and talent could be put to different uses. She provides a rich environment to allow for substantial growth. With her guidance, we’ve managed to climb the corporate ladder and begin to work on more meaningful and challenging projects. Not every supervisor takes the time to recognize talent and work on cultivating an environment that allows for achievement.
She is a mentor in the truest sense of the word. As a woman in the IT field, she builds up other women. It’s more meaningful to us that our mentor is a woman who rises up other women, and then we pass that on in the same way that she did.
(Ali's testimonial) I was very close to my mother, but she passed away the summer before my senior of high school. I feel like Karina looks out for me in a similar way as my mom would. She truly has my best interests at heart and wants me to be successful and happy. Karina propelled me to apply for a master’s program; while I was interested in getting my master’s at some point, she planted the seed and encouraged me to apply. She supported me by writing a recommendation. She recognizes my hard work and sees potential in me to do great things; she encourages me to push farther. She’s been an invaluable resource to me and I count my lucky stars that I was fortunate enough to be hired by her!
(Stephanie's testimonial) Karina saw my strengths in my previous position and provided me with opportunities that other supervisors haven’t. She knows that when I’m working on a specific project that I really dive deep, analyze and take the time to make sure everything is perfect. Her recognition of this provided me with the opportunity to take on a different and more fulfilling role in the company. She has also been a great counselor in encouraging me to achieve one of my ultimate dreams, of owning a house. She shared how she came from humble beginnings when moving back to the US, and how she remained financially disciplined in saving her money, creating wise spending habits (along with her husband), and making sacrifices, in order to see their dream of owning a house come to fruition. Thanks to her words of wisdom, encouragement, and periodic check-ins to see how I am coming along with my goal, she is always a constant reminder that all things are possible if you persevere. With this support I am proud to say that I will be able to start looking for houses soon. She has also supported my endeavors of Belly dancing. She has shown her love and support by attending performances as well as being front and center for classes I provided at our job.
As a fellow foodie aficionado, neither a birthday, holiday, or promotion does not go unnoticed without celebrating with an awesome meal for our department. How much more awesome can one be?
Outside of the workplace community, Karina gives back to the community at large. Her homeland of the Philippines was ravaged by a typhoon a few years ago; she packed up clothes and supplies to send to those in need. She gave a generous donation to a local organization that helps the homeless. She gave the donation anonymously because she didn’t want to donate for the recognition but out of the goodness of her heart. She finds joy in giving to others. She wanted to support what a coworker was doing and give to a charitable cause without being recognized.
Even though she stands only 5 feet tall, her loving heart, selflessness, bold spirit, and contagious laugh makes her stand 10 feet tall. To know her is to love an awesome human being that we should all try to aspire to be, a Supreme Woman!
